NAS connection details and local records stay on your phone
NAS connection details, sign-in credentials, app settings, browsing and playback history, NAS task records, caches and diagnostic logs stay on your phone and are not proactively uploaded to developers. Usage and crash reports are not automatically sent. Network communication for updates, third-party services and actions you initiate is explained below.
Exports and NAS transfers you initiate, third-party services you enable and content you choose to share send the necessary data to the relevant destinations, without passing through developer servers. If you separately send an email or a community message, its recipients receive what you choose to provide; this is not automatic collection by the app.
When you manually check for or download updates, or the app automatically checks on startup, the app contacts the developers’ update service. The server processes network information needed for communication, such as your IP address, request time and path. Update requests contain no accounts, NAS addresses, files, device or installation identifiers, local activity records, logs or crash reports, and installation results are not reported. Startup checks are enabled by default and attempted at most once every 24 hours. They only offer an optional update and do not download or install it automatically.
This policy explains what information SynoArk uses, why it is needed and how you can manage it. “We” means the people who develop and maintain this app.
1. Local storage and the developers’ data boundary
SynoArk is a local client for Synology devices you own or are allowed to access. The developers do not provide cloud storage for your NAS files, account details or NAS activity records. Account connection details, passwords you choose to save, sign-in sessions, app settings, browsing and playback history, transfer and backup records, thumbnails, caches and diagnostic logs are stored by the app on your phone. Except for content you explicitly export or separately send, they are not sent to developers. Developers do not automatically collect, retain or analyze this data through the app, and do not sell it or use it for advertising.
“Local storage” does not mean NAS features work without a network, or that files already on a NAS exist only on your phone. Browsing, uploads, downloads, backups and device management exchange the necessary data between your phone and the NAS you specify. QuickConnect may also use Synology connection or relay services. This traffic does not pass through developer servers, and developers do not receive copies of your NAS files through these operations. Exports, maps, sharing and feedback are explained below. Separate network communication for app updates is explained in section 12.
2. Connecting and signing in
You sign in with your Synology device account; there is no separate SynoArk account to register. The device address, username and password you enter are used to connect and check your access. Your phone stores device addresses, usernames, notes, app settings and information needed to stay signed in. Your password is saved only if you choose to remember it. Saved sign-in information uses protection provided by your phone.
3. Browsing files, photos and music
When you use these features, the app reads files, photos, videos and music you are allowed to access, along with details such as names, folders, sizes, dates, artwork and lyrics. People, places and tags in Photos come from the connected photo service. Device management also reads device status, storage use, apps and tasks, and sends the actions you confirm to your device.
Your phone keeps recent activity, searches, playback, transfer and backup records, and some temporary copies to help you continue using the app. A photo's location may reveal where it was taken, so consider who you share it with.
4. Photo backup and phone cleanup
After you enable photo backup, the app accesses phone photos and videos, folders, capture dates and locations within the access you grant. It sends items within your selected scope to the Synology device you choose. Automatic backup can look for new photos after you leave the page and schedules work according to your network, charging choices and the time your phone allows it to run.
Backup records help avoid repeat uploads and help you free up phone storage. Choosing to delete from both your phone and Synology device affects both copies. Freeing up space deletes selected phone originals, and some deletions cannot be undone. Check that your backups open correctly before continuing.
5. Sharing, copying and casting
After you create a sharing link, access depends on the audience, password and expiry you choose. Some sharing actions automatically copy the new link. Links, addresses and community numbers you choose to copy are also placed on your phone's clipboard and may be read by apps you use afterwards.
An app you choose for file sharing receives the selected files. Casting finds players on your current network and sends the media and details such as its name to the player you select. Check the recipient and content before sharing. Copies someone else has saved do not automatically disappear when you stop sharing.
6. Photo maps
The map display is provided by Huawei Software Technologies Co., Ltd. The app asks separately before enabling it. Once enabled, Huawei processes phone, app, system settings and network information needed to load maps, such as the phone model, system version, language, connection details, Wi-Fi name and information used to distinguish devices. The area you view is used to load the relevant map.
Photo markers use locations already recorded in your photos. This feature does not turn on your phone's live location. If you have agreed to maps and the photo service has no place name, the app may also pass the photo coordinates to your phone's system geocoding service to look up a name. That service is configured by your phone and may use a network connection. This map and geocoding data is not sent to developers. Declining maps does not prevent you from using other features. See Huawei's map privacy notice below for details of its information handling.
7. Synology connections and other services
When you connect through Synology QuickConnect, the app gives Synology the connection ID you enter to help find your device. Synology may help pass the connection through to your device. Your Synology device and its enabled services also handle sign-in and activity records according to their settings.
Custom websites, community apps and other apps you open handle information you provide to them. Your Synology device may also contact the sources you select for downloads or app installations. Please read those services' own notices.
Mail delivery and saved drafts are handled by the MailPlus service you connect to. Opening a message automatically loads its external images; image providers may learn your IP address and the time of loading. These requests do not include NAS sign-in credentials. New-mail checks run on sign-in, app foreground entry and mailbox refresh, without a persistent background mailbox service. Notifications may show the sender, subject or preview; you can disable them or restrict lock-screen display in system settings. Mail content and correspondence records are not proactively sent to developers.
8. Phone permissions and privacy controls
Choosing files, uploading, setting an avatar or backing up photos needs access to the files or photos you allow. Keeping original photo locations may also require access to location information stored in photos. Notifications show playback, transfer and backup status. Floating lyrics require permission to appear over other apps. Notifications, lock-screen playback controls and floating lyrics may show song names, lyrics or task names; you can adjust these in your phone or app settings. You can withdraw these permissions in your phone's settings; the related features may then pause or become unavailable.
App lock uses your phone's existing unlock methods. The app receives the result, not your fingerprints, face data or phone unlock code. Smart appearance uses ambient brightness to choose a light or dark look. Background privacy and screenshot protection are available in settings, but do not replace your phone lock and account security.
Browsing NAS contacts does not read your phone contacts. Only when you start contacts backup and grant permission does the app read the local contact list for selection, then process the names, phone numbers, email addresses, postal addresses, organizations, dates, notes and photos of the contacts you select. Selected contacts are sent to your chosen NAS address book without passing through developer servers or being uploaded to developers. Backup only adds contacts and skips matches already on the NAS; it does not modify phone contacts. Selections and backup payloads remain in the current page memory. Local operation records contain only necessary identifiers, stages and hashes, not contact content, and are excluded from configuration backups. You can revoke contacts access in system settings; denying or revoking it does not affect basic NAS contacts browsing.
9. Problem records and feedback
The app keeps records on your phone of whether sign-ins, connections and transfers succeed, to help investigate problems. These records do not directly include account names, passwords, file contents, device addresses or file locations. Exports also include the app version and phone system version. Records remain on your phone and are not proactively uploaded or sent to developers. The app does not automatically upload phone diagnostic logs or crash reports to developers. Exporting writes them only to the location you choose in the system document picker; exporting alone does not send anything to developers. A recipient receives an exported file only if you separately choose to send or share it.
When you contact us by email or in the community, we receive the question, contact details and attachments you send so we can reply and help. Check screenshots and attachments before sending them, hide anything private, and do not send account passwords or private files.
10. Exporting and restoring settings
Backup & restore saves app settings and account details to a file you choose. It does not back up all files on your Synology device. An export contains device addresses, usernames, settings and custom links, but excludes passwords by default. Remembered passwords are included only if you both protect the backup with a password and choose to include saved passwords.
The app does not upload settings backups to developers. A backup is written to the location you choose in the system document picker. If you choose a cloud drive or another document provider, that provider receives the file under its storage settings. The app is configured to disable automatic system cloud backup and app-data migration.
Keep the file and its password safe, and do not share them casually. A protected file cannot be recovered if you lose its password. You need to sign in after changing phones or importing an account from a backup. Existing accounts are not overwritten during a restore.
11. Viewing, changing and deleting information
You can view or edit connection details in account management, manage recent activity, temporary copies and problem records in settings, and disable photo backup on its backup page. Signing out clears the account's saved sign-in information, browsing records and similar data, and stops related work on your phone. Some backup and completed-task records may remain. It does not delete your Synology account or automatically delete files on the device.
App settings and records not otherwise cleared remain on your phone until you clear the relevant records or app data. Temporary copies and problem records are cleared or replaced as their size limits are reached. Files you separately saved to Downloads, other apps or your Synology device need to be deleted there. The app does not provide developer-hosted cloud backup, lookup, recovery or deletion services for your local app data. Contact us below to view, correct or delete information you voluntarily sent us as feedback.
12. App update service
You can manually check for new versions in App updates on the About page. Startup checks are enabled by default and run only while the app is in the foreground, unlocked and ready to use, with at most one attempt every 24 hours. Failed automatic checks do not show errors or interrupt use. The last check time stays on this phone and is not transferred through configuration backups.
A check retrieves public release information and your phone decides whether it applies. An APK is downloaded only after you confirm. You can cancel, retry or update later and continue using the current version. The APK and progress are stored in a separate update directory on your phone, outside NAS transfer tasks. Before installation, the app checks file integrity, app identity and signing certificate. Android asks you to confirm installation or allow this installation source.
The update service processes network information required to establish the connection, such as IP address, request time and path. Requests include no current account, NAS connection details, file contents, activity records, device or installation identifiers, diagnostic logs or crash reports. The app does not send download statistics or installation results.
13. Younger users, updates and contact
Younger users should use the app with guidance from a parent or guardian. Respect other people's wishes when handling their photos or files. We update this policy to reflect the app's features and show the update date here. Permissions that need a separate choice are explained in the relevant feature.
